Most people haven’t even heard of the term “virtual assistant” and those of us who have still hold widely varied ideas about what a virtual assistant is, the level service a virtual assistant should provide, and the position they should hold within a company.
Whenever I meet new people, it is always a challenge to explain to them what our company does. With most businesses you say “We’re a construction company” or “I have a car dealership” and people understand what it is you do and the conversation moves on. When you say “I have virtual assistant company” people always ask “what is virtual assistance?”
Ultimately this question is almost impossible to answer, because “virtual assistance” is NOT a job. It is a concept. It is like asking “what is music?” or “what is art?” We don’t ask these questions because both of these concepts are common. Society in general is familiar with the term “music” and has a good idea of what music should be.
Trying to explain virtual assistance is like trying to explain music to someone who has never heard of it before.
One hundred years from now, we won’t be asking “what is a virtual assistant?” I won’t be surprised if the term will have fallen out of use entirely. Virtual employment will become so common place that we won’t need a “term” for it at all.
